IRWIN’S OF PORTADOWN
100 YEARS IN THE BAKING!

IRWIN’S BAKERY

Irwin’s bakery was formed in 1912 by the grandparents of present day directors, Brian and Niall Irwin. As Northern Ireland’s largest independent bakery, they have been baking their own special breads for over 100 years. Having grown from the days of horse and cart delivery to exporting their breads across the UK and Ireland, the company continues to grow while staying true to its traditional family values and authentic recipes.

NOT ALL BREAD IS CREATED EQUAL

The Rankin Selection range includes Soda Farls, Potato Farls, Brown Soda Bread, Stoneground Wheaten and Fruit Soda. This range of authentic Irish breads, all different in their own way, bring something delicious and comforting to breakfast, lunch and dinner tables everywhere. Specialising in batch bread, muffins and Irish breads, Irwin’s gorgeous baked goods are based on traditional Irish recipes and baking methods, including original fermentation and slow–baking processes.

Our brief history

  • The exact date of opening of Irwin's Bakery is unknown. 1912 was chosen due to the discovery of a paper trail in the oldest original building before the bakery moved site. W. D. Irwin’s wife, Ruth Irwin and her sister baked fresh bread for the people of Portadown and the demand for freshly baked bread soon increased.

    1912
  • In June 1951 Portadown welcomed HM Queen Elizabeth and The Princess Margaret at the start of Festival of Britain week celebrations. W.D. Irwin, founder of the bakery, was invited to attend the Royal visit and soon became the Mayor of Portadown.

    1951
  • A new product that would revolutionise the bread market within Northern Ireland – Nutty Krust was introduced to the market. Over the years, Nutty Krust grew from strength to strength, winning awards for most iconic Northern Ireland product as well as Northern Ireland’s favourite product.

    1961
  • W. D. Irwin & Sons moves to an all-purpose new bakery on the outskirts of Portadown, having outgrown the initial set-up in the centre of Portadown. Construction began in 1993 and in 1995, the new location of W. D. Irwin and Sons Ltd opened for business by Barnoness Denton of Wakefield, Minister for Economy and Agriculture on 13th February, 1995.

    1995
  • In 2012 Irwin's Bakery celebrated their centenary year. Home of Northern Ireland's favourite product - Nutty Krust. Today, Irwin’s Bakery is still a family run business with grandsons, Brian and Niall Irwin, playing an integral role at the bakery.
